Our Community Garden was Devastated

March 6 , 2007

Wow, what a mess. Almost everything that was growing and not wrapped was either killed by the cold or the rabbits.

I'm not sure if it is our recent cold snap (the high was 21 degrees F today) or the string of negatives in February that did it. Regardless, the colchicums tips and hellebore buds are blasted.

Any other perennials present were eaten to the ground by the rabbits. The list includes the usual:

  • Maltese cross - Lychnis coronaria
  • Grape hyacinth - Muscari ameniacum
  • Asters - A. laevis, A. "Milka", A. "Raydon's Favorite"
  • Sedges - Carex pennsylvanica, C. grayii, C. muskingumensis
  • Tulip tips
  • Penstemon Husker Red - P. digitalis
  • Parsley - Petroselinum crispum

And some that are normally wildlife resistant

  • Sedums - S. spurium, S. kamtschaticum, S. rupestre, S. "Angelina" (first time ever for all four!)
  • Hyssop - Hyssop officianalis
  • Onions - Allium cepa cultivars (first time for full grown onions)
  • Wild geranium roots - G. maculatum (first time for the plant and first time the rabbits have eaten any root!)

Any shrubs that were not wrapped (witch hazels, wisteria, and leadplants) were also eaten by the rabbits, including:

  • Crimson pygmy barberry - Berberis thunbergii (first time ever, ate nearly the whole thing, thorns and all)
  • Alpine currant - Ribes alpinum (first time ever)
  • Tree peony - Paeonia suffruticosa
  • Even a twig of St. John's wort - Hypericum cultivar

Only a few things in our garden and our neighbors' (Jim and Stephanie) were not munched. These plants get the MOSS STAMP OF APPROVAL for rabbit resistance.

  • Bearded iris - Iris X germanica
  • Sedum album (maybe the fleshy, sappy leaves are unpalatable year round)
  • Boxwood - Buxus cultivar (Jim&Stephanie's)
  • Butterflybush - Buddleia cultivar (Jim&Stephanie's)
  • Alberta spruce - Picea glauca (Jim&Stephanie's)
  • Juniper - J. communis (a weed on the fence)

All sedum munched except Sedum album
