50
Degrees Drop
January
30, 2008
In
the last 24 hours the bottom fell out.
The roofdeck thermometer went from 490F around 9:00am
yesterday to -10F this morning at 6:30am. That Ôs at least a 50 degree difference in less than a day!
All my snow insulation melted exposing the plants, and then the temp
plummets. WTF!
How
am I supposed to keep my tender plants protected in wild weather like
this! Fifty degree days are not
followed by negative temperatures in Corsica! I put a few sheets over the containers and pulled out my
secret weapon: a blue tarp. But
without snow, I donÕt know if it is enough.
My
quest to keep these hellebores, crocus, muscari, and others alive on a roofdeck
through a Chicago winter might make me akin to a modern day Don QuixoteÉ
CRAZY!!

The snow melted off the containers exposing
plants and waterlogged soil. A
few hours after this balmy thaw Artic air moved in. |
