Summer Bulbs are on Sale in Stores

June 8 , 2007

Those who love summer flowers with bright colors and fragrance head to your local nursery or garden center. The summer bulbs are on sale! Dahlias, elephant ears, begonias, rain lilies, pineapple lilies, shell flowers, canna, etc... are 50% off. Run to store and rescue these guys from the compost pile.

Be sure to feel the bulbs. They should be somewhat firm. Because it is so late it may have already started to sprout. That would be a reject normally, but at half price, as long as i t is not diseased or mushy, take it. The bulb will recover and grow this eason. It may not flower for a year or two, but if you have the space and inclination to keep it alive, give it a shot.

Unless you love a challenge and don't mind wasting money, DO NOT buy lilies now. Lilies prefer to be planted in mid Autumn or early Spring. Most are shriveled and dead in the bag by now

The toughest bulbs are in the daffodil family. Check out Summer Bulbs for more info.
