Above: Framing Raised Beds

Our James Park raised beds are an original design. A 2*4 frame is skinned with 2*12 boards to provide maximum height and strength for the buck. The L shaped bed is 12' on the longest sides, 9' on the shorter ones, and 3' wide. It is a fun design, but it takes a long time to frame out and make level, especially if you wait until spring when things are actively growing.

We only use non-treated wood for our vegetable beds. The old bed had rotted and was falling apart. For the new bed we used many of the same princiiples, like an inner frame to provide support, but inside braces were the extra step for the 2008 edition to keep the large 2*12 boards from bending and curving. If all goes well, we should have another 5 years+ before we have to rebuild.

The most hilarious part of the project had to be walking the wood over from Home Depot across a busy Oakton St.

Left: bed nearly complete. Scraps of wood from cutting pointed frame pieces were used to brace and tie the boards together.

Because the ground was not even, leveling was a beast. Howevr, the most important and time consuming step of this or any construction project was measuring and measuring twice.

The 2*4s along the top of the bed serve as frame support and make it easy to keep track of the tomato/okra/bean rotation schedule.
