Flowers
: Strong nutty fragrance fills the air. Male flowers crowded on bottlebrush or lizardtail-like spikes. Fruits form from female burrs.

Foliage: glossy toothed leaves

Culture
: sunny location in rich deep soil. The American chestnut (C. dentata) was once a dominant forest until the Asian chestnut blight (Chryphonectria parasitica) wiped out most specimens.
