tulipa tarda and titty's star with geranium leaves

Above: Tulips and Geraniums

An incredible display of hardy perennials plus an orange bell pepper. In order, Tulipa tarda, Tulipa 'Titty's Star', Geranium maculatum album, Aquilegia 'Origami Blue & White', and Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' kept pot2 blooming from early April through spring. The columbine and Johnson's Blue geranium continued with intermittent blooms throughout summer. When not in bloom their decorative, mounding foliage still made for an attractive container. (Cutting back the columbine and geranium prompted lush re-growth.)

It is rare when a combination planting works out for the whole season. Typically there are conflicts or unappealing contrasts. But this container looked great all year. Even the potentilla weed that emerged in summer had nice, dark foliage to compliment the columbine flowers.

Because the perennials were so robust, the orange bell pepper did not have a chance to do much. But at 33 cents a plant the six tasty bell peppers it produced were a bargain.

Pot1 with its serviceberry flowers in spring, dark purple serviceberries in June, and mass of Asiatic lilies in summer is a good partner for Pot2.

Sharon's planter was another dynamic container. After doing a potting demo on NBC news, we took a container, some soil mix, lilies, petunias, and ornamental grasses to Sharon's to create a lovely 3 season pot.
